"Hansel and Gretel" is a popular opera in three acts composed by Engelbert Humperdinck, with a libretto by his sister, Adelheid Wette. The opera premiered on December 23, 1893, at the Hoftheater in Weimar, Germany.
The opera is based on the famous fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, and follows the story of two young siblings, Hansel and Gretel, who are sent out into the woods by their mother to gather berries. Lost and alone, they come across a gingerbread house inhabited by a witch who intends to cook and eat them. Through their wits and courage, they manage to outsmart the witch and escape back to their home, where they are joyfully reunited with their father.
The music of "Hansel and Gretel" is a mix of folk melodies, lush harmonies, and Wagnerian influences, and has become known for its charming and whimsical character. The opera's most famous aria is the "Evening Prayer" duet, in which Hansel and Gretel sing a beautiful lullaby as they prepare to sleep in the forest.
"Hansel and Gretel" remains a beloved classic of the operatic repertoire and is frequently performed around the world during the holiday season. Its appeal lies not only in its enchanting music and delightful characters but also in its universal message of the power of love and family to overcome adversity.

Verdi Requiem - Ensemble Apex
The Great Hall, Dangrove (Alexandria)
8pm, 27th & 28th October
8pm, 27th & 28th October
"In this unique pair of performances, Ensemble Apex will perform a contemporary reading of Verdi’s Requiem with members from Sydney Philharmonia Choirs’ VOX and guest principal vocalists.
Presented by Phoenix Central Park in the modern cathedral of Dangrove, Judith Neilson’s renowned art storage facility in Alexandria, these performances represent the very first opening of the venue’s Great Hall to the public.
The Requiem Mass (or Messa da Requiem, as it was originally known) has long been a grand gesture reserved for the most important occasions. It serves as a musical atonement for the soul’s movement from earth to heaven. For a century, Mozart's Requiem Mass was the genre's prevalent archetype — some audiences will recall the scene where a dying Mozart composes his final measures from his bed in Amadeus. That was until 1874, when Italian operatic composer Giuseppi Verdi reinvented the genre with his masterwork of cataclysmic proportions. Premiering in Milan with over 1000 singers and 400 instrumentalists to mark the passing of prolific Italian writer Manzoni, the piece was criticised for being an opera in liturgical robes. A requiem mass, it was supposed, should be solemn — not epic. What Verdi achieved was a rare and masterful combination of operative bravura with his symphonic prowess, his resulting creation one of the most influential pieces of repertoire in the canon.
These forthcoming concerts will not only offer audiences a sublime evening of Verdi, but also a rare look inside the spectacular and multi-award winning Dangrove building, a working facility which houses Judith Neilson’s globally significant art collection."

Orfeo ed Euridice - The Cooperative
8pm - 17, 19, 20 March, 2021
Rooftop, Sydney Harbour YHA
(110 Cumberland St)
"What will I do? Where will I go? ... There is no more hope, on earth or in heaven."
Since time began, we have tried to make sense of life, of death, of how we experience grief and loss. It is an eternal question; something we are desperate to understand, yet ironically can never really answer. Unfolding as a fantasy on grief, Gluck and Calzabigi's 1762 opera Orfeo ed Euridice draws upon a "myth" which finds an equivalent in every place and time. In 2021, its voice is as pertinent as ever.
